João Veloso

Full Professor of Linguistics at the University of Porto (Portugal) and at the University of Macau (Macau, China). Currently, he is the Head of the Department of Portuguese of the University of Macau. He is a permanent researcher at the Centre for Linguistics of the University of Porto. At the University of Macau, he also belongs to the Centre for Linguistics and to the Institute for Advanced Studies. His research focuses mainly on the phonology of Portuguese, with a special interest on the organization of the segmental and prosodic system of the language (phonological primitives, interaction between elements and segments, syllable weight and word-stress assignment). His scientific interests also include areas such as language typology, the history of linguistics, the phonology/ phonetics and phonology/ morphology interfaces, linguistic variation, language acquisition and processing, and language policy. He is the author or co-author of more than one hundred publications in these fields (books, book chapters, papers and articles in conference proceedings). He was a principal investigator/ co-investigator in several national and international projects in the areas of linguistics and teaching innovation in Higher Education. Between 2009 and 2022, he was the coordinator of the Centre of Linguistics of the University of Porto. Between 2018 and 2022, he acted as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Pro-Rector) of the same University.
